Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report an absence?

Absences may be reported by telephoning the attendance office voicemail at (510) 538-8833 ext. 6002, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You may also fax (510) 247-9439. Written notes may also be used to report absences. Notes

  • Must be written by the parent or guardian – no student-written notes will be accepted
  • Include student’s name, grade, date of absence and reason
  • Include the parent’s signature

Every day a student is absent, the absence must be reported or verified within 72 hours in order to be an excused absence.

What if my student needs to miss school for something other than illness?

Students who know they will be absent from school because of vacation, family emergency, or other reason must have their parent send a note or contact the attendance office to obtain an Independent Study Contract. Please notify the attendance office at least one week prior to the leave.

How do I arrange for my student to leave early for an appointment?

Have your student bring a signed note to obtain an Off Campus pass on the day of the early release. Notes should include student’s full name, time they need to be released, reason for early release, and the parent or guardian’s signature. For the safety of the student, no phone requests to release a student will be accepted. Students will only be released to individuals listed on the student’s emergency card.

What does my student do if he or she has to arrive at school late?

If your student is tardy due to an appointment, we recommend that you obtain a note from the doctor or dentist. We also recommend that the parent or guardian should send a note with the student to the attendance office reporting the reason for the tardiness.

How can my student contact me if he or she needs to call me during the day?

The phone in the office is a business phone and is only available for student use in case of an emergency. Students who regularly forget items should not expect to use the office phone to ask parents to bring items. Students who have to use the phone in an emergency are charged $1.

What is your cell phone policy?

Canyon Middle School does not encourage or recommend the use of cell phones on campus. Phones must be turned off while students are on campus. Phones may only be used in the main office, in the presence of a teacher with permission, or at the bottom of the hill. Other electronic devices such as iPods and CD players are not allowed on campus
and will be confiscated.

Where does my student get lunch tickets?

Lunch tickets are purchased in the cafeteria office before school. Lunch tickets are $2.25 each and can be purchased in blocks of ten only. Lunch is also available with cash payment.

How much homework should my child expect?

A minimum of 1.5 hours per week is assigned in each academic area (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science). Students are expected to make up any homework due to absences.
